Some things that can affect your home’s water supply include an aging water line, well water quality, seasonal and unexpected contaminations, violations of federal drinking water standards, and other plumbing issues. Some water problems may not be as obvious as others. That’s why you need us to test your water to determine if water treatment is necessary and which solution is best for your home.

Look for the telltale signs of poor water quality:

Hard water issues: Dry skin and hair, bathtub rings, spots on glass, silverware and fixtures, dull, dingy clothing, disappointing performance, and a shortened life expectancy of water-using appliances are all problems frequently caused by hard water. Hard water contains dissolved calcium, magnesium, and, in many cases, iron. Most homes have hard water, whether it’s supplied by a private well or a municipality.
Cloudy water: Cloudy, murky, or grayish water is usually caused by dissolved or suspended solids. This is also known as “turbidity.” Water can become turbid naturally or from land disturbances such as construction, storms, and urban runoff. The turbidity of your water can range from low to high. But even if your water looks clear, it could still contain a high level of dissolved solids. That’s why, whether your water is turbid or not, we recommend testing it.
Chlorine: Since the 1850s, chlorine has been used as a disinfectant to kill harmful bacteria in water or the pipes that transport it. Although it has helped end several major threats to public health and is essential at the treatment plant and in the water distribution system, it is no longer necessary once the water reaches your home. Chlorine tastes and smells bad, dries skin and hair, fades clothes (bleach is made of chlorine), and can dry out the rubber seals in appliances, shortening their lives.
Strange tastes and smells: In its pristine state, water is colorless, tasteless, and odorless. So, if your water tastes or smells funny, there’s probably a reason.
Earthy or musty odors: These types of complaints are generally the result of compounds released due to decayed vegetation and are typically associated with different forms of algae. While not toxic, they are unpleasant and can be offensive at very low concentrations.
“Rotten egg” smells: Another common source of smelly water is hydrogen sulfide. Hydrogen sulfide is a colorless corrosive gas that has the characteristic odor of rotten eggs. If present in high enough concentrations, it can leave an unpleasant odor on hair and clothing. It can also accelerate the corrosion of metal parts in appliances.
Metallic tastes: As the name implies, a metallic taste to your water indicates the presence of metals such as iron, copper, manganese, or zinc. Iron and manganese are often naturally occurring and are predominately found in groundwater. Copper and zinc can come from an aging water distribution system or the corrosion of copper plumbing and brass fittings.
Rust and discoloration: Iron, manganese, and other minerals can cause rusty-orange or black staining. The stains seem impossible to clean. Additionally, you may see stains on clothes, fixtures, sinks, tubs, water-using appliances, and toilets.
Blue-green stains: Blue-green stains are often caused by copper deposited from the corrosion of the water piping and fixtures. The most likely cause is low alkalinity, which typically results in low acidic (low pH) water.

"Solved my hard water problem in about 4 hours! The previous owner of the house installed a whole home filtration system, but it wasn't stopping the huge amount of chlorine or hardness from Spotsylvania County water. Nick, the installer, went over every section of the system to help me understand how it works, and how to maintain the system, which is minimal - open the lid, if the salt is low, add some more...simple. A small leak happened overnight and he was back the next day to fix it. I would definitely recommend Mermaid to my friends or anyone who is looking for a water-softening system."

Due to some special requests I had for my installation, I had to have installers out here 3 times. Russ was here the first time and did a great job and was extremely professional and very easy to work with. The second guy that came out was ok but didn't do the job right. I requested Russ to come out and fix the issue from the previous guy and again, Russ did a great job. We have hard, acidic well water in our house and, as a result, have had numerous problems with our well and our water system (plus every appliance in our house that uses water). Our water stopped working last night--AGAIN--so we called Mermaid. They sent out a technician first thing this morning. He did a thorough check of our water system and found that the well pump is not working, so we will have to call another company for that service. Mermaid's technician, Nick, was knowledgeable and professional and explained each check he performed. He took a lot of time to diagnose the problem but did not charge a service fee since he wasn't able to correct the problem. Great service, would definitely recommend this company.
